RENT is one of my all-time favorite musical masterpieces. I say masterpiece because it’s an awesome show, awesome soundtrack, awesome movie! I LOVE RENT! So when I saw this Travelzoo deal show-up for $17 general admission tix (usually $34), it was a done deal. I probably would’ve paid full-price too… but getting half-off made the show all the more amazing.
If you don’t know the story of RENT, please climb from under that rock you’ve been living under… Ok, that was a little harsh, I’ll give a quick synopsis: It’s the story of a group of friends, they’re excursions together and individually. RENT explores homosexuality, homelessness, AIDS, struggling artist, etc. all through music!
I’ve had the soundtrack since 2006 and have played “525,600 miiiiinutes” (Season of Love) about 2,000 times so it took everything in me not to sing along.
The cast of the show were really good. Some better than others but they complemented each other well. The lead character, Mark, had an amazing tone and was a pleasure to listen to. The characters also fit their roles perfectly. The casting director nailed this one. It was just as I would’ve imagined the live performance to be. And even though I’ve always imagined seeing it on Broadway, the blackbox theater portrayed it just as well.
The play is only showing through June 30. So only 3 more days before it’s gone!
Pros: I LOVE RENT!; Did an awesome job using the small stage to portray many different scenes; Hudson Theater has a cafe right next door
Cons: Can’t really think of any worth blasting… this happens sometimes when I know what to expect and my expectations are met.
